  1. A1 - Part of the value in creating digital portfolios for students or us is to reflect and identify what and who we are "about." Creating the portfolio (selecting what to put in it, what to write) requires us to pause, take a breath, and look at the bigger picture of our work. To make it most meaningful, though, it needs to be ongoing and not a one-shot occurrence.

In the past, we have asked students to create digital portfolios and it has really been seen as a compliance-driven experience. Students (and perhaps the teachers facilitating the experience) did not see value in creating the product. It didn't seem to serve a purpose to them. One example can be seen here: https://sites.google.com/a/ohlsd.org/cody-jent-eportfolio/

We think that the outcome would be very different (and more positive) if students were empowered to create e-portfolios that were individualized to their passions or interests.

Also, the existence of online portfolios raises other questions... For example, if students do develop e-portfolios and they are on the district's network, who owns the data?

  2. A1) A digital portfolio, which could include blogging or some type of system to share thoughts and ideas (like Twitter), can play an important role for connecting as leaders and students. As George mentions, it is a platform for "open reflection" which helps deepen learning.

Creating a digital portfolio makes leaders reflect and purposefully create a message and share ideas. "When I know everyone can see my work and reflections, it makes me think more deeply about what I'm learning." GC

A blog can also be used a learning tool to collaborate with people from all over the world. People can challenge ideas and thinking.

Students can specifically benefit from a digital portfolio as it is a platform for reflection and a collection of resources and demonstrated growth over time.

  3. Digital Portfolios
Allows for adaptability among all learners
Expands a network of learners to build relationships and voice their thoughts of the organization and/or mission
Through short messages the digital platform will allow ideas to resonate which may generate collaboration among multiple groups of stakeholders

As I reflect on the potential for the use of digital portfolios for leaders, I see the following benefits:
-tool to house evidence of my growth as a leader (may provide artifacts of work accomplished, outcomes from projects completed, initiatives led and learner outcomes displayed (e.g. student performance data)
-place to show growth in knowledge, disposition and skills ...in harmony with our discussions and work with Dr. Bobby Moore.
    - personal space that provides snapshots of how I have helped other -leaders grow or contributed to their growth (whether it be those seeking to enter the profession (e.g., teaching courses at OSU, meeting and encouraging and mentoring emerging leaders in the district), those who just started their career (PL for new administrators) or those who have been serving for a period of time (seasoned principals or new directors).

    Empowering Staff & Students
What are learning opportunities and experiences for students and staff that focus on empowerment vs. engagement?

Onsite or offsite learning through dialogue and guest speakers allows real-world global situations to be presented to the learners.
The learner can identify the problem and collaborate.
Empowerment brings to mind the ability to make choices and follow through on a course of action that will elevate, expand or lead to personal growth and the growth of those around that individual. Engagement is part of the empowerment process.
